Dental Bonding

Dental teeth bonding uses an enamel-like material that is applied, hardened and sculpted to change the color or shape of teeth, cover flaws, and close gaps or spaces between teeth in a single visit often without anesthetic. Cosmetic dentistry uses composite tooth bonding as a technique to work wonders for your smile. Dental tooth bonding can match the texture and translucency of your teeth, gaps between the teeth can be closed, the shade of your teeth can be improved, chips, can be eliminated, and you can enhance your self-confidence through an improved smile.

How long will tooth bonding last?

How long tooth bonding lasts depends on many factors that are unique to the individual. Composite tooth bonding materials are wonderful for providing you with the results you want to see; however, there are some limitations to the materials. Some people will get staining on the margins of the teeth bonding and will need some touch-up work. Many people will go for ten or fifteen years and have the tooth bonding look as good as the day it was put in.

Regular professional maintenance by your dentist is recommended if you have extensive dental bonding. Maintain your bonded teeth by brushing and flossing faithfully. Try to avoid sweets or starchy foods between meals. Tooth bonding holds up much better when it is clean. Having your teeth cleaned two to four times per year by your dentist can help protect your bonding and make it look better and last longer. Be careful to choose gentle cleaning tools. Harsh toothbrushes can damage dental bonding by removing some of the shine and making it more susceptible to staining. Dental bonding is a quick and economical way to improve your appearance if you have minor flaws in your smile that you would like to be fixed.

How is a tooth bonded?

Bonding is usually a one-visit procedure. The tooth is prepared by lightly etching the area to be repaired, and a treatment of bonding primers and resins is applied to the tooth. The composite bonding material enters the microscopic holes created by etching and forms a hybrid layer of tooth and composite that is extremely strong and that seals and protects the tooth. The best bond is when composite is bonded to natural enamel. Dental tooth bonding composites are resin paste before they are hardened so that they can be sculpted to the proper shape when being applied.

Dental bonding contains various pigments in order to match your tooth color and translucency. Once the composite resin is applied to your tooth, a special high-intensity curing light is used to harden the bonding. The dental tooth bonding matches the natural, healthy appearance of your natural teeth. The nature of bonding allows for excellent matching of Hue, Value and Chroma for restorations that disappear in your mouth.

To have cosmetic composite bonding performed on your teeth or to have any questions that you may have answered, contact Sunnyvale Dental Care for your initial teeth bonding consultation.
